If you’re anything like me, you probably Googled how the AI overview feature works and – no surprise – got an AI-generated overview in response. Digging a bit deeper, you might have stumbled upon Google’s developer page, which happily promotes the new feature, but doesn’t exactly tell us any details on how they programmed it. So, instead, you’re left dissatisfied with many unanswered questions.
What we do know is that this feature dropped on 14th May 2024 – a day that changed Google search results forever. Following this, we also know that it’s not exactly flawless, leading to some hilarious responses. We’ve rounded up a few of our favourites so far.
- One for the recipe books – Google recommends adding some non-toxic glue to your pizza sauce if you’re struggling to get the cheese to stick.
- The power of manifestation – This user was able to feed Google information to trick the AI into thinking he won a DARPA award.
- The more you know – Google promotes the health benefits of running with scissors.
- One out of four isn’t so bad – Google presents a list of actresses in their 50s, or close enough.
- Geography isn’t its strong suit – Google tries to insist there are no countries that begin with the letter ‘K’.
- A touch of spice – If you’ve been looking for a new secret ingredient to add to your spaghetti that gives it a lovely little kick, why not try gasoline?
- Easy as A, B, C – One food ending with the letter ‘a’ is good enough, right?
Even with all the data the internet provides, AI will never fully be able to separate fact from fiction – especially sarcasm from sincerity. So, it’s likely impossible that we’ll ever get a flawless AI search function. But it’s clear Google will always be committed to keeping their searches unpredictable.
