Writing about travel, whether in a blog post, product page or longer article is an essential skill for content writers.

Your language can transport a reader around the world, offering them a tantalising, irresistible glimpse into new cultures and landscapes. Your poetic pose could even inspire them to explore a new destination for themselves.

In this blog post, we’ll go over a few simple techniques to make your travel content really shine.

1. The key is in the detail

An engaging piece of content genuinely imbues a sense of what it feels like to be a part of a particular city or country. A great way to achieve this is by offering vivid descriptions of more everyday sights and experiences associated with a place.

For example, you could write about how the soothing heat radiates your skin, describe the clamouring caw of wild and exotic birds darting between fruit trees, or, detail how the street vendors beautifully display their aromatic spices, piled high on their stalls in a rainbow of colours.

2. Get emotional

It’s also important to relate to the emotional desires of your audience. How relaxed would you feel sipping a fruity cocktail by the beach as your warm ocean toes gently meet the sand? Imagine waking up from a restful sleep surrounded by the sweet, serene sounds of nature, away from all the hustle and bustle of modern life.

When you write, try to convey how being in a certain place will fulfil the emotional desires of your reader, be it rest and relaxation, wonderous exploration or perhaps historical intrigue. For audiences seeking a little more of a thrill, share a sense of excitement by reliving adventurous hikes, daring watersports or exhilarating ski slopes.

3. Include your own perspective

It’s easy to fall into the trap of writing old cliches, doubting what you could really add to the status quo as a travel writer. For example, everyone knows about the jewel-box beauty of Venice; its marble sculpted piazzas, intricate network of gothic canals and domed basilicas. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t offer your own original contribution to a location.

Write from the heart, pouring out your own perspective to get a piece of original and authentic content. For example:

“Venice. I first learned of its gothic appeal following a morbid fascination with the camphor-stuffed plague masks worn by the shadowy, aquiline figures of the spooky plague doctors. Captivated by the grotesque horror of the Black Death, I poured over Venice’s dark and mysterious history.

At the time of the plague, nothing was known about how diseases spread. Rather, medicine was rooted in superstition, believing spirits invaded the body to wreak havoc on the human soul. The doctor’s masks warded off these evil energies, using aromatic herbs to purify the air and prevent unwelcome disease.

Behind its gilded frontages, modern Venice still imbues a dark feeling of romantic superstition and gothic intrigue. Twisting into a shaded backstreet, the romantic gondola-clad canals transform into moody marshes, where dark spirits claw out from shadowy corners. Lost souls drudge across the bridge of sighs, condemned to the interrogation of the Doges Palace. A city of story-book romance? Or, that of masqueraded strangers, mysterious intentions and exhilarating menace? You decide.”
